KEITH BENEDICT BUTLER – “FOSS”

1922 – 2008

A Country boy at heart, Keith’s formative years were spent on a farm at Namban, just north of Moora. His entire working life was with the Western Australian Government Railways as a Fireman, then Driver in the Geraldton region, the South West and finally to Midland in the mid 1950’s.

As a young bloke living in the country, he loved his sport. Football, Cricket and Tennis and he was a passionate Swan Districts supporter. His story is directly related to the formation of the Swan Valley Football Club. In the early 1960’s he was goal umpire for Midland YCW football team in a metropolitan competition and when YCW joined the Hills Football Association in 1965 he had progressed to water boy. Home ground then became Middle Swan Oval (Jack Mann Oval). Keith helped mark the “Paddock” every home ground.

The attraction of a grassed oval, new jumpers and a generous Swan Valley management saw the formation of the Swan Valley Football Club in 1970. He loved the interaction and camaraderie with the young blokes and soon developed a talent as 1st Aid man, finally taking on the title of “Trainer”, a role he filled with pride until he lost his mobility and independence in 1997.

A confirmed bachelor, he loved the sense of family and belonging at “The Valley”, and had a huge pride in any success the club enjoyed, particularly the premierships. Having been around the club so long, he became affectionately known as “FOSSIL”, “FOSS” for short. With his laid back nature and wicked sense of humour, he spent many hours bantering with everyone while strapping ankles and massaging sore muscles.

Swan Valley Football Club became his second family and a major part of his life. He was extremely honoured to have the Fairest and Best medal named in his honour and to be awarded Life Membership. Even after entering a nursing home he always took an interest as to what was happening at “The Valley”. His passion for the club was so strong that his dying wish was to have “Glory to the Valley” sung at his funeral.

The Boys did him proud.
